Something awoke in the garden…
Now with this direct link to the galleries!
In honour of this fine Friday the 13th, thought I’d take the opportunity to make a proper post about a highlight discovery of this past summer, Demon Potatoes by L. A. Cunningham… a mini-comic, and possible curse, acquired during the 2024 When Words Collide festival…
Proof of Life…
So, yeah, it’s been another hot minute since we’ve added something the stacks here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library but life is like that sometimes. And while we’re still in the thick of things, we thought we’d better pop our heads up and at least say hi…
Book of the Week: The White Road
One of my favourite types of books to read are fiction novels set in a remote and cold setting with some intense survival element. And I figured out a long time ago that I love these types of books because I am a big wuss and would definitely die if I was the main character. Reading these kinds of books allows me to live these extreme circumstances without leaving the warmth and comfort of my home.
So, when I saw the cover of The White Road by Sarah Lotz on the bookstore shelf, pre-pandemic, I had to pick it up…
Meet Julie Hiner!
It is Wednesday once more and every Wednesday we showcase authors, publishing professionals, library people, readers, and more in our weekly BALLER Profile post.
This week we are bringing the METAL to Wednesday in our interview with Julie Hiner. You’ll probably want to read this one while listening to an 80s glam metal playlist…
Meet Steve Stred!
Happy Hump Day, Everyone! Every Wednesday you can look forward to reading interviews with authors, publishing professionals, library people, readers, and more.
This week we are shaking up our BALLER profiles with horror author, Steve Stred…
Book of the Week: The Compendium of Srem by F. Paul Wilson
It’s Monday and time for a new Butterflies & Aliens Library Book of the Week!
Last year when I was in Houston in October of 2023, I stopped by a lovely independent bookstore called Murder By The Book. They are a specialty bookstore that focuses on mystery and crime books.
And this weird little book caught my eye, so I bought it.
A Faustian bargain… but the good kind
Reading The Picture of Dorian Gray in my teen years was a gateway drug to reading other classics and it made sense that Faust by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe quickly appeared on my radar. I mean, a book about selling your soul to the devil in return for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures – how can you resist?…
Embracing the Prairie Witch
Book mail is one of our highlights here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library, but today’s package is especially exciting, an anthology edited by our very own Stacey Kondla, Prairie Witch published by Prairie Soul Press…
Frankensteining Frankenstein
At the When Words Collide festival in 2021, towards the end of a workshop on Altered Books, I mentioned that the next project I was pondering was something to do with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, riffing off the central theme of the story to assemble a copy of the book made up of parts of different editions.
My small but mighty audience was intrigued, and we decided to plan a workshop around that idea for WWC 2022…
A different kind of immortality…
Today we learned the sad news that Anne Rice died yesterday, Saturday, December 11, 2021, at the age of 80.
Although she wrote over 30 novels, for us here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library, as we’re sure it is for many fans, Anne Rice meant The Vampire Chronicles trilogy – Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and The Queen of the Damned.
Art From The Unknown
Welcome to any visitors who are arriving here from the Art from the Unknown virtual exhibit!
And if you ended up here first, I encourage you to go check out the Art of the Unknown, a virtual gallery sponsored by Rachel Notley and the NDP Caucus here in Alberta, in which I have the privilege and pleasure of being included for my dystopian altered book series.
Small Press Saturday: Lanternfish Press
We have endured another week of drought and smoke, and this week I’ve been in the mood for more eclectic and weird reading fare.
I was scrolling through Twitter last week and came across a tweet with a photo of a horror book display in a book shop. Being a book nerd, I had to zoom in and take a closer look at the books displayed. One book in the corner caught my eye. It was The Night Library of Sternendach by Jessica Levai.
