Art From The Unknown
Welcome to new visitors arriving here from the Art From The Unknown virtual exhibit!
And if you ended up here before seeing the exhibit, I encourage you to go check out the 2021 Edition of Art From The Unknown, a virtual gallery sponsored by Rachel Notley and the NDP Caucus here in Alberta, for which I have the privilege and pleasure of being included for my dystopian altered book series:
A sub-category of artists’ books, altered books are created when an existing published book becomes the sculpting medium out of which another work of art is created.
Learn more about how each work came about by clicking on the buttons below, or browse all the altered books posts here in the Butterflies & Aliens Library, including recordings of two virtual presentations from the When Words Collide festival held earlier this year.
Content Warning: The posts linked below do include images of books being physically altered, by which I mean getting cut up.
Happy Exploring!
– Winston
About the Artist, from the exhibit:
A lifelong Edmontonian, Winston Pei has been a graphic designer, an IT consultant, and a Whyte Ave coffee shop owner, among other things. His career aspirations include Jack of All Trades, Maker of Things, and, in the spirit of Dirk Gently, Wholistic Librarian. If you insist on a “real” answer, Winston is currently Digital Content Strategist for the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering, President of the Kokopelli Choir Association, a student librarian, a community builder, and proud parent to three young adult humans, among other things. He sometimes wrecks books for fun.
