Thing Explainer
We here at the Small-Flying-Creatures-with-Pretty-Wings-and-Creatures-from-Other-Places-in-Space Place for Books and Information love playing with words. And we love it when other people play with words. One person whose playing-with-words we love is... named using words we can't use right now.
Let me explain.
Alphabetizing your ABCs
So the bookish weirdness that we embrace here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library means that, among other things, Recreational Shelf Organizing borders on a competitive sport. It definitely ranks as a beloved pastime. The who, what, and wherefores of how we sort, store, and display our bookish collections provides much fuel for discussion and debate, as well as hours of entertainment.
In memoriam: Katherine Barber, 1959-2021
The Butterflies & Aliens Library was saddened to hear of the death of Katherine Barber, founding editor of the Oxford Canadian Dictionary and Canada’s “Word Lady,” on April 24, 2021, of cancer. She was 61.
Happy Birthday to the Bard of Avon!
It’s been a busy few weeks here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library and, yeah, we haven’t managed to post as much as we would have liked, but what’s done is done. Though we’ve seen better days, we definitely couldn’t let this day go by without at least a tip of the virtual quill to the Sweet Swan of Avon, the National Poet of England, the Immortal Bard… William Shakespeare!
Pi Day 2021!
As the official unofficial family holiday of our Chief Alien… and because PIE… we here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library of Literary Eccentricities & Rarities want to celebrate by sharing a selection of cookbooks and food-related books from our collection, plus a vintage geometry book from 1951.
And, of course, PIE.
Some literary collective nouns
We here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library are delighted to be ‘installing’ something every library needs… a bulletin board! (and yes, we’re installing it right next to our card catalogue… because #OldSchool…) And this cartoon by Tom Gauld, author of The Snooty Bookshop, is what got us to finally put up our board…
Earl Grey, hot…
What kind of gift do you give a word nerd? How about a metaphor? Or is that an idiom?
