The Travis Baldree Deluxe Editions!
I mentioned one of these books in a post back when we were still doing a Book of the Week but now have to give another shout out because the deluxe editions are out! Introducing the beautiful new editions of Legends & Lattes and Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree…
Book of the Week: Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
This week’s Book of the Week has already gotten a bit of coverage, but I decided I wanted to make it my pick anyways. In the spirit of romance and friendship for V/Palentine’s Week – and because it features a bookstore!…
A miniature fairy library…
One of the lasting benefits of being a regular at When Words Collide, a readers and writers con held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is connecting with a community of book nerd artists alongside the “usual” readers and writers and publishing folks. The latest addition to our shelves from this talented crew is this Janice Blaine original, a fairy library to grace the shelves of our human one…
Small Press Saturday: Tyche Books
Last weekend, we put out a call for small press recommendations and I am happy that this week features one of those recommendations for our weekly Small Press Saturday post. This weekend we are spotlighting an Alberta small press – say hello to Tyche Books!
Small Press Saturday: JournalStone
Today we are heading south of the Canadian border so I can introduce you to JournalStone Publishing, founded in 2009 by Christopher C. Payne and based in Carbondale, Illinois. They are definitely a small press that embraces the dark and weird, specializing in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, and generally dark fiction.
Small Press Saturday: Laksa Media
We here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library love a good anthology, and some of my absolute favourites in recent years have come from Laksa Media, based out of Calgary, Alberta. Not only have the stories been remarkable, and wrapped in gorgeous covers, but this young small press lives its mission of changing the world through its publishing program, not only by donating a portion of its revenue to social causes, but raising awareness through the themes and content of their anthologies.
Canada includes other realms too…
For our third instalment in celebration of Canadian Children’s Book Week 2021, I’ve pulled four children’s and YA novels by three different authors off my To Be Read pile. And I must confess, they’ve been on my TBR pile a fair while. But they continue to call to me because they all promise to transport me to other realms, passports to mental travels yet to come. Canada also includes fantasy worlds and alternate realities!
Happy Birthday, William Morris!
Born on this day in 1834, William Morris is perhaps best known as an artist and designer, and a major force behind the Arts & Crafts movement. But he was also a poet and novelist, connected to the Pre-Raphaelite movement of the mid-1800s, and also the founder of the Kelmscott Press in 1891.
Small Press Saturday: Fairwood Press
We are travelling south of the Canadian border this week for Small Press Saturday with a look at Fairwood Press. Most of the presses we look at every Saturday will be Canadian, but Patrick Swenson, publisher at Fairwood, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and definitely qualifies as an honourary Canadian.
Small Press Saturday: Erewhon Books
Happy Small Press Saturday! This week we showcase a small press that has only been around since 2018: Erewhon Books, a small independent Canadian press that focuses on novel-length works of speculative fiction.
Happy Birthday, J. R. R. Tolkien!
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the "father" of modern high fantasy literature in the western world, was born on this day in 1892.
