Short Story Advent Calendars, Day 2!
#SSAC2021 Day 1
Short Story Advent Calendars, Day 1!
The Short Story (and other) Advent Calendars 2021!
One of our favourite things about December here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library is a tradition that began back in 2015 with the publication of the very first Short Story Advent Calendar by Edmonton publishers Hingston & Olsen – a daily December dose of bookish goodness to get us into the holiday spirit!
Happy Wolfenoot!
We here at the Butterflies & Aliens Library also have a long, if somewhat unrelated, history of animal adoption and companionship: cats, birds, snakes, gerbils, fish, rabbits, tarantulas, guinea pigs – both hairy and hairless... and dogs. Lots of dogs.
So naturally when we discovered a holiday dedicated to a “Celebration of Canines and Kindness,” and heard the story of how this holiday came to be, we couldn’t let it pass unrecognized.
Happy World Toilet Day!
There’s a reason why toilet humour is called toilet humour, but humour can often be a way to convey important messages. So in honour of World Toilet Day, we wanted to share a book that seeks to deliver some important health information, with humour, on a very closely related topic…
Happy World Kindness Day!
Just a quick share of a book cover from our alphabet collection, and the letter of the alphabet that happened to stand out most today, in honour of World Kindness Day.
Happy Sesame Street Day!
Premiering on November 10, 1969, Sesame Street has been a cornerstone of my reading life for my entire life. “C is for Cookie” is one of my earliest alphabet memories and The Monster at the End of This Book helped set me on the path that led to a Master of Arts on the design of books and now has me going back to school again for a Library degree.
Something from the Past, Something for the Future
Just a quick post to share three new acquisitions: Tom Wharton’s 1995 novel Icefields in its new Landmark Edition, and TWO new Short Story Advent Calendars, one for adults and a new new one for kids!
Art From The Unknown
Welcome to any visitors who are arriving here from the Art from the Unknown virtual exhibit!
And if you ended up here first, I encourage you to go check out the Art of the Unknown, a virtual gallery sponsored by Rachel Notley and the NDP Caucus here in Alberta, in which I have the privilege and pleasure of being included for my dystopian altered book series.
A Happy Butterflies & Aliens Halloween!
Nope, no way we could let our very first Butterflies & Aliens Halloween go by without posting something! Not when there are so many Halloween-themed books over which our Head Alien and Butterfly-in-Chief bonded!
Starting with our ABCs…
We wrote in a past post about the challenges of alphabetizing our collection of alphabet books, and have since continued to acquire more items. Rather than manually updating the list of books from that post, we decided to experiment with an online cataloguing tool, a project we alluded to in our recent post about The Organization of Information. And how best to start any project? You start with your ABCs…
