Happy Small Press Saturday! This week’s post will be short and sweet as I decided to showcase a small press that has only been around since 2018. Erewhon Books is a small independent Canadian press that focuses on novel-length works of speculative fiction. They publish books with strong literary merit and broad appeal for science fiction and fantasy fans and mainstream readers who like books with speculative elements. And they are publishing adult works along with upper YA books.

The founder of Erewhon Books is Liz Gorinsky who spent nearly fifteen years with TOR and has edited authors that include Mary Robinette Kowal, Liu Cixin, Nisi Shawl, Catherynne M. Valente, and Jeff VanderMeer. She is a Hugo winner, an editor of great renown, and a presence in the science fiction and fantasy community.

Though their current list is small, the books they are releasing are stellar, with C. L. Polk’s latest, The Midnight Bargain, landing on the 2021 Canada Reads list of contenders. The physical quality of their books is luxurious with gorgeous dust jackets and cover art. Everything they do they are doing with precision and care.

I discovered Erewhon when I came across a copy of Scapegracers by Hannah Abigail Clark at Owl’s Nest Books. The gorgeous shiny cover drew me in, and the cover copy captured me – I mean a teenage lesbian witch named Sideways forms a coven and navigates friendship and supernatural peril?! Shut up and take my money!!

I am seriously so excited about this new publisher on the speculative scene in Canada and I will be watching them with great interest as they continue to produce new books and champion new talent. And I will be snapping up some of their previous releases because it looks like every one of them are going to be great reads. If you love speculative fiction and excellent writing, I hope you will check out Erewhon Books.
