Happy Birthday, Alice Walker!

Alice Walker was born on February 9th, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia, USA.

A writer and poet, she has written seven novels, four collections of short stories, and four children’s books, as well as essays and poetry. She won the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and the National Book Award in 1983. Her books have sold more than fifteen million copies and her work has been translated into more than two dozen languages. She is an activist, a defender of human rights, and a defender of the rights of all living things.

She has a wealth of work to explore, so if you have never read anything by Alice Walker, February being Black History Month is the time to change that.

Stacey: I will be chasing down a copy of The Chicken Chronicles because if you know me at all, you will know that a memoir about a relationship with chickens is right up my alley! And that cover!!

Winston: Meantime I’ve put Walker’s first poetry collection, Once, on my wishlist… a paperback edition in the short term, but eventually I’d love a copy of the 1968 first edition in its beautiful blue dust jacket.
