Africanfuturism goes to Space…

If you’re looking for reading recommendations, look no further than our Butterfly-in-Chief. She lives to put the right book in your hands.

Most of the time, her recommendations come as suggestions… “I think you might like this book” or “this author sounds like what you might be looking for”… both product of and reason for her success as a bookseller.

But every once in a while, her recommendations arrive as orders, and you’d be well advised to listen.

So it was that our Head Alien was introduced to Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, with a vehement “You HAVE to read this book!”

As usual, she was not wrong.

We now count Binti among our favourite works of speculative fiction, our first introduction to a subgenre of science fiction that Okorafor calls Africanfuturism. Turns out Binti was also the first work Okorafor set in space, and we were delighted to travel there with her. We were also delighted that she has continued Binti’s story with two sequels, Binti: Home and Binti: The Night Masquerade.

Okorafor’s use of language delivers such richness with a remarkable economy of words, and the worlds she creates with them even more so. The cover art is also spectacular.

We have since expanded our collections with more of her works, including delivery just last week of her latest work, Remote Control, joining our copies of Akata Witch and Akata Warrior, and Lagoon.

We’re looking forward to visiting more of her worlds and we invite you to join us… our Butterfly-in-Chief says you have to.

Happy Reading!

– Stacey and Winston
