Beeton’s Book of Household Management

PLO 8: Research

Students will be able to individually and collaboratively evaluate published research in library and information studies (LIS) and other fields of knowledge and apply basic principles and techniques of research in LIS with an understanding of the relationship between LIS and other disciplines.

Coming out of LIS 598: Special Collections & The History of the Book, this research paper, downloadable in pdf format, on Beeton’s Book of Household Management is a more traditional example of an academic paper.

Combining research with a study of several primary sources dating between 1859 to 1915, in both digital and print formats, Beeton’s Book of Household Management: A Case Study looks at this early version of a homemaker’s reference guide as a window onto the history of the book, and in particular book publishing in the late 1800s.
