Small Press Saturday: Cormorant Books
It’s Saturday again!! And it’s time to meet another small press.
Cormorant Books is a small press with a small staff and they do big, amazing things!
Established in 1986, this press has had challenges and major successes. Started by a Canadian couple, Jan and Gary Geddes, Cormorant was sold to new owners in 2000. Their books have been listed for or won many different awards, including the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Amazon Canada First Novel Award, the Lambda Literary Awards, the Kirkus Prize and many more. Under the guidance of publisher Marc Cote, the Cormorant of today is responsible for bringing the multi-award winning young adult novel The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline to market under their DCB Young Readers imprint. Associate Publisher Barry Jowett is an intense advocate of quality and meaningful literature for children. Together, they publish a variety of diverse authors and books that explore humanity, history, culture, identity, and being Canadian.
What I love about Cormorant and DCB Young Readers is their unwavering commitment to literature – beautiful writing from varying points of view. And they don’t just publish fiction. They have become well established in the non-fiction market with books like Claws of the Panda by Jonathan Manthorpe.
This is a press to watch as they continue to develop and grow. I hope you will consider searching out a Cormorant or DCB title and give them a try.
Happy Reading!
